A stone’s throw from Lanark lies Gleghorn Glen, an enchanting ancient woodland and a Site of Specific Scientific interest. Come and join me in an exploration of the glen, through the oak and ash trees, alongside the meandering river. Not only will we have the opportunity to discover some locally rare species of fauna we may find some of the Nationally Rare and Nationally Scarce species of invertebrate during our journey. During the afternoon we will look at methods of identifying plants and fungi. As well as examining edibles we will discuss potential lookalikes, both inedible, poisonous and toxic. A setting within an SSSI woodland gives us the perfect opportunity to discuss sustainability and how, as foragers, we can live in harmony with the environment. We will discuss nature as food, looking at nutritional as well as cultural, philosophical and health benefits. To round of the afternoon we will share a wild food picnic by the river, sampling dishes made with some of the foragables that we will come across over the course of the day. All ages (and families) welcome. This walk includes some narrow track beside a steep slope and is uneven underfoot at times. As such appropriate footwear, such as walking trainers or boots, is essential. Unfortunately this walk is not suitable for those with assisted mobility.
